This international freight development ties in with the government's plan to create a year round shipping channel from Chongquing to the sea. By summer 2009, when the Three Gorges Dam is completed, the average river journey time between Chongquing and Shanghai will be cut in half, to about seven days. And this will be complemented by a billion dollar riverside railway project that will slash the journey time between Chonngquing and Shanghai from 41 hours to 10.

These kind of huge infrastructure projects are happening all over China and revolutionising the options for international freight forwarding from China.

UK businesses that are entering the China import market should make sure that they choose a freight forwarding company with know-how, up-to date knowledge and an experienced local network of freight forwarding agents. Not all shipping companies can provide this winning combination.

Despite various bicycle shops proclaiming one bicycle brand over another, it appears that not one of the brands of bikes mentioned is made in Britain. This surprised me when I went looking for a new bicycle. Since I ride a great deal and having done so for over twenty-five years, I am fed up with what I call the, "cheap bikes" - the ones where I constantly have to get new parts fitted. I have had a good number of bikes over the years - none of them expensive, but all imports - the last one from Tunisia. That isn't to say that bicycles aren't made in the UK today, high-street bicycle shops and independents alike can identify some manufacturers, but they are not what you would call, 'off-the-shelf'. They are nearly all made-to-order. By contrast China manufactured over sixty-three million bikes complete in 2008.

To buy a British-made bike, a punter will, more than likely, need to have it made-to-measure and hand-made. This is fine if a person can afford the sort of price that you would expect to pay for hand-made luxury. But supposing someone only has a few hundred pounds to spend (or less!). Are we, then, destined to buy only imported machines? Sadly, the answer seems to be yes. In years - or perhaps decades - gone by, it would have been specialist bikes that would have been imported from, say, Europe, and other, cheaper varieties imported from the Far East, like China. But 'globalisation' has stripped many manufacturing industries from British soil and sent it overseas. So, what constitutes 'British-made'? Is it a Good that is designed and built in its entirety by British workers or simply a Good that is assembled by British workers from imported components? If a bike is imported from overseas because it is made in a country on an assembly line where the labour rates are much cheaper than those of the UK, why are these machines still so expensive? If a hand-made bike can be made in Britain in a week for a couple of thousand pounds, is it beyond the realms of possibility to have an assembly line in the UK that can utilise British workers making bikes for the same 250 GBP to 1,000 GBP that we are already prepared to pay for an import?

Maybe it is a reminder back to the days of British Leyland in the 1970's and 1980's when British made cars were just no competition for their Japanese counterparts. Yet, when the likes of Honda and Toyota brought manufacturing expertise into Britain, it was British workers that were, and still are - current credit-crunch aside - the labour force behind these facilities. So, does that make their products (in the UK) British-made?

Britain is slowly being stripped of its engineering heritage. Trades like Fabrication, Coded-Welding, Fitting, Sheet-Metal Working just to name a few, are on the decline, with some colleges unable to attract young people back into these skills. It is a Catch-22 situation. It is good to know that highly skilled engineering companies still exist in Britain, able to make hand-made, quality bicycles, so why cannot we bring affordable bicycle manufacturing production lines back to Britain?

Meanwhile, the fastest-growing Chinese exports to the United States are zinc, nickel, lumber, mining and oil processing equipment, all of which have been seeing rapid growth and so there is a clear upward trend in freight services for these items.

And what of the trade in the opposite direction? What are the main American exports to China? Well, of the China import from the United States in 2006, the following products were the most important, accounting for the majority of freight forwarding.

Importing "blind" over the Internet can be asking for trouble, especially if a cash advance is called for. Also watch out for hijacked email accounts, using free email addresses. Payment by letter of credit is standard when it comes to importing from China and so cash demanded in advance (unless this is in payment of samples) should automatically set alarm bells ringing. A letter of credit is not perfect; for example, an exporter could fill up boxes with paper and you might not realise the goods are not there until after your bank has honoured the letter of credit. However, most scammers do not go to such lengths to hoodwink suppliers in this way, as the paper trail left by this method could be traced by the authorities. Trade fairs or personal recommendations are generally the safest way to establish contacts and validate the credentials of a supplier.

Those who have chosen product marketing as a business model are naively under the impression that most wholesale suppliers will be able to provide them with just about any popular retail product, affordable to them at any price. Reality, however, always seems to get in the way of our ideals. Most current, in vogue, branded merchandise usually have restrictions on the way it is distributed. For example, LV Handbags are never sold "wholesale to the public", or to just anyone who has a resale certificate. And while there are exceptions, you will never see too many "half off" sales of Louis Vuitton Handbags even at the retail level.

In addition, unsold inventory is not passed along to wholesalers or the secondary surplus market. Excess product that is damaged, is sent to their corporate service centers to be repaired. What cannot be sold or repaired is destroyed. In terms of online retail sales, the only web portal that markets LV handbags is Eluxury.com. Take for instance Shenzhen, China. In Shenzhen, there is an enclosed shopping mall called Luohu Commercial City. The mall is six stories tall and sells a wide range of items, including handbags, brand name clothes, shoes, audio-visual products, souvenirs, and digital video discs. All can be had for a price that is about half to one third of what you would pay here in the United States. Some DVD's can be purchased for four Hong Kong dollars, which translates to fifty cents in United States currency.

The biggest problem with all of the merchants selling their wares within this megaplex of retail activity is the undeniable fact that most of it is counterfeit. And, like the never ending parade of fakery that is part of the Luohu retail environment, finding your way to the authentic manufacturer or wholesale distributor of a particular branded item is like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Paperwork, does not make it authentic! There is a prevailing wisdom among some brand seekers that receiving a certificate of authenticity from a brand name overseas manufacturer will provide assurance that the article is genuine. Supplying paperwork to overseas customers as "proof of purchase" for branded merchandise is basically a fallacy. Any labels, tags, paperwork, or certificates of authenticity that assures the buyer of brand certainty can be faked right along with the product itself. The only individual or businesses that are required to have proof of authenticity, are those who are authorized to resell the branded item, or the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), of the brand in question.

If there is a legal challenge to the authenticity of the product they are selling, then paperwork can be provided to confirm that they are legally sanctioned to sell or manufacture a particular brand name product. To my knowledge, no wholesale supplier of brand name merchandise, either overseas, or in the United States, will offer their customers paperwork stating proof of authenticity. The proliferation of counterfeit items within the People' Republic is staggering. The replication industry in China, as well as other Asian countries rely on the production of counterfeit merchandise and has become an industrial staple. It is estimated that 8.5 % of the Chinese GNP involves the production of counterfeit merchandise.

In addition, if you are thinking about importing brand name merchandise through online trading forums such as Alibaba.com and EcEurope.com, than I have some less than encouraging news for you. A majority of the trades leads on both forums require extensive research and a working knowledge of the importing business before you ever think about doing business with any of the listed companies. However, I don't want to be totally negative about trade lead forums. I think that they serve their purpose in terms of finding leads for non-branded general merchandise, manufacturer leads, and industrial equipment purchases. But, I would be very skeptical of anyone who presented themselves as the original wholesaler or manufacturer of American brand name merchandise.

Trying to forge a relationship with someone who claims to have the genuine article can also be a financially dangerous endeavor. Most overseas business to business suppliers require payment in the form of wire transfer or telegraphic transfer (T/T). The purchasing minimum that some suppliers ask for is a shipping container load of merchandise. Wiring cash into an overseas business account can be a recipe for disaster. Once the money leaves your account it is gone forever. If the seller does not deliver, you basically have no legal recourse in terms of getting your money back. The only way to recoup any funds would be for the seller to rewire the cash back into your account. You are basically at the mercy of the supplier.

The bottom line is this. If you want products like Nike Air Jordan, you have to go to Nike and find out how to purchase their products. The same is true with just about any name brand merchandise you want to buy. If you cannot afford a particular product, well, then sell a non-branded item. There are plenty of product niches out there that you can explore. With that being said, I am not the last word when it comes to importing brand name merchandise. Please do your homework and consult the appropriate legal, business and import-export resources.

There is a lot to learn online and remember that you are not stuck with sourcing from just suppliers in China, there are better ways to getting hot products from fully reliable suppliers. China becomes world's biggest car manufacturer

Official figures Monday confirmed China had overtaken the United States to become the world's top auto maker and market in 2009 boosted by government stimulus measures.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced annual sales rose 46.15 percent year on year to 13.64 million units. Output increased 48.3 percent to 13.79 million units.

Passenger car sales were up 52.93 percent to 10.33 million units, and production was 10.38 million units, up 54.11 percent year on year.

The brisk sales in China is in contrast with the United States where 10.43 million units were sold last year, 2.8 million units less than in 2008, as the global financial crisis kept U.S. consumers out of the showroom.

The three top-selling brands last year were Shanghai Volkswagen, FAW Volkswagen and Shanghai General Motors -- all joint venture brands between Chinese auto makers and the German or U.S. counterparts.

"China's market still enjoyed abundant potential, as living standards improved and the average auto ownership remained low," Dong Yang, CAAM deputy chairman told Xinhua.

The industry would continue to see rapid growth in the next decade as it had become a pillar of the national economy, he said.

To boost the sluggish auto market in 2008 and spur the use of clean and fuel-efficient cars, the government announced in January last year that it would halve the purchase tax to 5 percent on vehicles with a displacement of less than 1.6 liters.

Rural consumers got up to 5,000 yuan (735 U.S. dollars) in government subsidies for vehicles with a displacement under 1.3 liters.

The annual revenue from auto purchase tax was expected to surpass 110 billion yuan, a rise of 10 billion yuan year on year, as more units were sold, analyst said.

Besides policy incentives, the underlying reason behind the sales boom was that the consumption structure was improved while housing and traveling costs increased, said Yao Jingyuan, chief economist with the National Bureau of Statistics.

"It would profoundly impact the Chinese auto market," he said.

Brisk sales in China also allowed the world's leading auto makers report double-digit growth in China last year despite bleak pictures in other parts of the world.

Against the backdrop of 15-percent slump worldwide, Ford reported a 44-percent sales rise to 440,619 units in China in 2009.

General Motors (GM)'s sales rose 66.9 percent to a record high of 1.82 million units in China. The German auto maker Volkswagen AG sold 1.4 million units in China, up 36.7 percent from a year earlier.

Since the sales in 2009 would overdraw demands for this year and next, and with the less aggressive tax incentives for 2010, sales expansion was expected to slow remarkably this year, said Huang Yonghe, analyst with the China Automotive Technology and Research Center.

Dong Yang estimated the auto sales growth would retreat to 10 percent to reach 15 million units in 2010.

"Despite China's top position in sales, there are still distance to go before it becomes a real auto giant, as it does not own the state-of-the-art technologies nor world-famous brands," said Dong Yang.

As part of its "going global" strategy, Geely, China's largest privately-owned car maker, is close to finalizing a deal to buy Volvo to acquire the new energy technology and access the world auto market.

The Beijing Automotive Industry Holding purchased some assets of GM's Saab in December. The Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial also has agreed to take over Hummer brand.

Acquiring foreign brands could help accelerate China's pace of technological innovation, but it could not be a shortcut to the global stage, said Han Lei, deputy director of the Society of Automotive Engineering of China.

"We can not simply copy foreign brand's technology and management expertise, but use them as a basis to develop our own model," he said.

The unprecedented boom also boosted producer's morale for further expansion.

"The Chinese auto makers added the capacity by 30 percent to 20million units in 2009, leaving their bitter memories of job cuts and shuttered business far behind," said Wei Wenqing, vice manager of the Dongfeng Citroen Motor Corporation.

Fuel-efficient cars have already shown some signs of overheating, as the demand for auto with displacement less than 1.6 liters was about 3 million units before 2011, less than half of the capacity of 7 million units, said Jia Xinguang, auto industry analyst.

"Since this market is largely affected by government policies, uncertainty and risks remain," he said.

The Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway with the world's fastest train journey with a 350-km-per-hour average speed, started operation Saturday.

Two passenger trains rolled out the Wuhan Railway Station and Guangzhou North Railway Station at about 9 a.m. and reached the terminals within three hours, compared with the previous 10 and a half hours.

The service between Wuhan, a metropolis in central China, and Guangzhou City, a business hub in the southern Guangdong Province, was put into trial operation on Dec. 9, reaching a maximum speed of 394.2 km per hour.

A 600-member delegation from Xianning City boarded the train at 10 a.m. at Xianning North Station to promote tourism and attract investment in Guangzhou. Nearly two hours later, they had to take off winter coats on arrival of Guangzhou where the temperature was about 20 degrees Celsius at noon.

"We have long been waiting for the service to start," said Zheng Zengjin, manager of Yaochi Hotel of Xianning and a delegation member. "Previously, we had to suffer the tired and crowded journey as the train ride took more than 10 hours."

"It is really good news for us to have so comfortable and fast ride," he said. "As the travel becomes more frequent, we expect closer cooperation between the Pearl River delta and less developed regions such as Xianning."

In 2004, China hailed the completion of the rail line from Guangzhou to Shenzhen, both in Guangdong Province, with a speed of 160 km per hour. Now the speed more than doubled within five years, said Xu Fangliang, general engineer in charge of designing the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed line.

The average speed of the high-speed railways is 243 km per hour in Japan, 232 km per hour in Germany and 277 km per hour in France, he said.

China on Tuesday began construction of the world's longest cross-sea bridge linking its southern economic hub of Guangdong province to Hong Kong and Macao, a move widely expected to bring economic ties closer.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang attended the inauguration ceremony in Zhuhai, Guangdong, and launched the project.

"The construction of the bridge is a milestone event," he said at the ceremony, five days ahead of the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to Chinese rule.

"It is a move for Hong Kong, Macao and the Pear River Delta region to cope with global economic downturn, boost investment and inspire people," he said.

"Meanwhile, it can also further increase the links and promote economic cooperation between Hong Kong and Macao, and between the mainland and Hong Kong and Macao," he said.

"It is of great significance to maintain the long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao, and enhance overall competitiveness in the region," he said.

Li also urged construction authorities to work with a strong sense of responsibility and sense of mission, and build a landmark in the region and a model of cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong and Macao in the field of infrastructure construction.

Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, chief executive of the Hong Kong special administrative region (SAR), Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao SAR, and Chui Sai On, the incoming Macao SAR chief executive, also attended the inauguration ceremony.

During a meeting with the three officials, Li said he hoped the two SARs could further enhance cooperation with Guangdong to seek mutual benefit and common development by drawing on one another's advantages.

Li vowed all-out efforts of the central government to continue to support the Hong Kong and Macao SAR chief executives and governments to govern by law.

He urged the SAR governments to closely watch changes in the global economic and financial situation, consolidate the stabilizing trend in the regions' economies, and promote the long-term prosperity and economic development of Hong Kong and Macao.

The Y-shaped Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge will have a total length of almost 50 km, of which about 35 km will be built over the sea, making it the longest cross-sea bridge in the world, said Zhu Yongling, an official in charge of the project construction.

It will be built according to the six-lane expressway standard with a vehicle speed limit of 100 km per hour.

"It is designed with a service life of 120 years. It can withstand the impact of a strong wind with a speed of 51 meters per second, or equal to a maximum Beaufort scale 16 (184 to 201 km per hour)," Zhu said.

"It can also resist the impact of 8-magnitude earthquake and a 300,000-ton vessel," he said.

The entire project was estimated to cost almost 73 billion yuan ($10.7 billion), which would be shared by authorities on the mainland, and in Hong Kong and Macao, he said.

During construction, they would take into consideration the protection of the ocean environment and marine life, such as white dolphins, he said.

"We will control the construction noise and turbidity of seawater, and prevent oil pollution," he said.

The construction would take about six years, he said. On completion, it would take about half an hour to travel from Zhuhai or Macao on the west bank of the Pearl River to Hong Kong on the east bank, compared with the current three hours, he said.

Here is a brief introduction of L/c:

A Letter of Credit should be China importers most used international trade payment term. By opening a Letter of Credit it promises payment, provided the seller complies with the terms and conditions inside the Letter of Credit. The Irrevocable letter of credit can't be canceled or varied without the approval of both parties. This type of L/c, is the most common and preferred one, in China.

A bank issues a letter of credit (L/c) on the behalf of buyer or importer under the following conditions:
a) When an importer is importing items to its own country.
b) Any purchasing, where products from the country is sold to another commercially.
c) When an exporter from China is executing a contract outside his own country, importing items from a third country to sell to the second party.

These 3, are the basic, to obtain a letter of credit in present day of trading.
There are certain charges and payments, related with this sort of trading terms. The issuing bank charges the applicant costs, for opening a letter of credit.

The fee depends on the credit of the applicant, and primarily consists of:

A) Opening Charges: This comprises of promise and procedure charges for the time of the letter of credit.

B) Retirement Charges: This is to be remunerated when the time of letter of credit ends. The bank offering the letter, analyzes the bill according to UCPDC (Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits), and tax charges based on cost of goods.

There are some risks also, that are connected opening this kind of account:

• Basic risks : Financial position of the Importer, the products involved the exporter, national and foreign exchange risk.

This is a really good question:) Ok, many of you will say alibaba.com or madeinchina.com. Everyone is representing his/her own experience. Some really are/were lucky, in finding a reliable supplier. But some have experienced "nightmares".

With the most members (paid and free), it is still the biggest directory. No wonder, it has the most visitors and it is the most popular China manufacturer directory. It is very user friendly and always updated. But be aware of the "scammers" ! Even paid members with 1-2 years "gold supplier" labels, can be one of them.

Blog Directories Submission (Off Topic)

It is really "off topic", but i had to write an article about blog directories.

After searching the web preciously, i found 2 sources, which allowed me to subscribe to almost the best blog directories on the www.

Except 2 of them, i submitted my blog for free! I will not mention these blog directories (you can see them clearly on the pic), but i would like to say some words to the admin of super blog directory(the only directory, which rejected my submission 2 times):
"look at this picture, sbd will be never listed in my blogs again" (i am really disappointed).

5 Big Mistakes Made - Importing From China (ezine article series)

Mistake 1: Never take sourcing too easy.

Finding suppliers from b2b websites is getting more difficult. Take advantage of professional sourcing companies. You may read my article "china manufacturer sourcing", if you want go your own way.

Mistake 2: Don't communicate on line.

Be sure that your supplier understood 100% what you want. Communicating through e-mails is more effective and reliable, than chatting with some programs like "trade manager" or "messenger". Most of the sales representatives in Chinese companies are using translation programs. And anyway Chinese people are used to say "okay" and "no problem" in most cases. Let them confirm your order by e-mail.

Mistake 3: Don't fear some costs for the cargo of samples.

Secure your order by confirming with samples. If you want to order o e m, you should send a prototype or formula with exact specifications. The manufacturer will ask you for possible mold and material costs. Negotiate a pay-back after reaching a certain amount of order. Re-confirm by receiving samples, they have produced according your wishes.

Mistake 4: Never ask for CIF prices at first.

Request quotes on FOB basis. Its easier calculation for the supplier and you have the control of shipping your goods with your own forwarder. Cheap solutions from manufacturer side, can cause delays and damages of your goods.

Mistake 5: Never decide for the supplier, before you have visited their factory.

China may be far away, from your country, but it is a must for a smooth and long term relationship with a Chinese manufacturer. As you will make the far way to China, you should consider to visit at least 4-5 suppliers, before you decide. You may need assistance from consulting companies, who are western origin with local experience. They can organize all the meetings in China and assist you with translation, during factory visits.

How to source for a reliable Chinese supplier? There are many ways to do it. Like, b2b websites offering suppliers, some with labels like "gold supplier". These are only paid members, which can be done by any company. There is absolutely no guarantee that they are reliable.

Another way would be, to visit trade fairs in China and meet the suppliers directly. According my 6 years China experience, I know that 70% of the exhibitors are trading companies. Only if you have a well organized schedule, you will be able to find the right suppliers, out of thousands exhibitors. Now, I will tell you some secrets, how professionals do sourcing. The best way to source on line, is to search through search engines. Put in your product and search. Usually, you will find the b2b websites in the top results. No problem, go on and search there. Make a list of 4-5 factories, which you can find common, on most b2b websites.

Check their own websites. A serious supplier should have a website in English language. Compare the contact information. If they are same like on the b2b websites, go on to search the "who is" info. Are the websites registered with the same company name, go on in searching again in Google, but this time, only with full company/factory name. Check at least 20-30 results. After all this, you now know, that you have found some serious suppliers. Its time to contact the suppliers. Write a detailed, common inquiry with easy English. Send it to all as one mail. Let them see that you contacted their competitors, too. It will be like an open bid, enjoy it!

The 105th China Canton fair was disappointing. As you can also see, from the pictures, the 1st phase of Canton fair was shocking empty. And i guess, that the number of new visitors, was not more than 15%! May this is reflect the future export-rate 2009? Hard times coming, for many Chinese manufacturers, i can say!
Anyway, life and business must go on:) The good point of less visitors was, i did spent only 2 days on Canton fair. The sourcing success on our side was %90. We found some new supplier with innovative products. Our clients from Turkey and Georgia enjoyed our fair-assistance and were proud, to place their 1st OEM orders, from China- directly! From my personally side was it the last Canton fair visit.
Our Consultants will still assist our clients, but i will focus on specific trade shows in Shanghai and of course; Expo 2010 !

Nearly 1,000 toy exporters shut down in south China in 2008

Product recalls, rising production costs and the global financial crisis caused almost 1,000 Chinese toy exporters in just one province to shut down last year.
According to data released Saturday by Huangpu Customs, 922 toy exporters in Guangdong Province closed operations in 2008.
That leaves the area with 2,167 toy exporters compared with the 3,089 that were operating in late 2007.
Dongguan, the province's leading toy base, had more than 4,000 factories and some 2,000 suppliers at its peak in 2001.
The numbers began to drop about two years ago.
Rising prices for raw material and labor, along with stronger Chinese currency raised production costs by 25 percent for most companies, according to Li Zhuoming, head of the Guangdong Toy Association.
Large quality recalls by international toy giants, including Mattel Inc., also hurt the industry as Western countries raised standards to ensure toy safety.
The financial crisis compounded the situation as consumption fell and fewer orders came in.
Just in Dongguan, about 20 percent of the small toy factories closed last year, according to Huangpu Customs.
China is the world's largest producer and exporter of toys, with Guangdong alone contributing about 70 percent of the overall output.
In 2008, Guangdong exported 6.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of toys, up 3.6 percent from 2007. The growth rate for 2008, however, was 19 percentage points smaller than that in the previous year.

188 million people in China, will travel by train only, during holidays, for the chinese new year celebrations.
Many days before the 25th january, the offical start of the holidays, millions of people; began to queue at major trainstations. Most of them are factory workers, heading home, somewhere in the countryside. After 1 year hard work, they are happy, to see their family, again. As to the far distances in China, most will spend half of their vacation, on coaches or trains.

China Import Export Rates Declined Again

China's exports and imports declined for a second consecutive month in December, reflecting weakening external and domestic demand amid the financial crisis, customs officials said Tuesday. Exports fell 2.8 percent year-on-year to US$111.16 billion, while imports fell 21.3 percent to US$72.18 billion, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said. The rates of decline for exports and imports accelerated from November. Exports fell 2.2 percent year-on-year in November, the first monthly decline since June 2001. The previous decline, a much smaller 0.6 percent, reflected slumping U.S. demand after the tech bubble burst. In December, exports fell 3.3 percent month-on-month, while imports fell 3.6 percent. The trade surplus was US$38.98 billion, down from November's record high of US$40 billion. Total trade for 2008 was US$2.56 trillion, up 17.8 percent from 2007. The total included US$1.43 trillion in exports, up 17.2 percent, and US$1.13 trillion in imports, up 18.5 percent. The full-year trade surplus was US$295.46 billion, up 12.7 percent, GAC said. The European Union remained China's top trade partner last year, with bilateral trade of US$425.58 billion, up 19.5 percent. The growth rate, however, was lower than the 27-percent increase in 2007. Trade between China and the United States, the second-largest trade partner, rose 10.5 percent to US$333.74 billion. Japan remained China's third-largest trade partner, with bilateral trade of US$266.79 billion, up 13 percent.
